Grants in Saint Paul Public Schools

The Innovation Office supports all district staff who apply for and manage grant-funded projects. Our team works with potential grant applicants to determine eligibility, requirements, and capacity for the project. Because grants commit SPPS to a financial contract with an outside partner, we also guide staff through the required policies and procedures to receive permission to apply.

All staff considering a grant application must notify the Innovation Office as soon as possible. To do so, please make a copy of the Intent for Grant Application form and send the completed document to grants@spps.org.

Grant projects range from $1,000 field trips for one classroom to multimillion enterpriseprojects that affect every school. Regardless of the project’s size and scope, grant applicants work with the Innovation Office to submit an application and then, if awarded, manage the grant project.

Does grant writing sound overwhelming? We can help. While applicants provide the narrative content, we can help brainstorm ideas, edit writing, and develop budgets. We then submit applications and field communications with external funders as well.

There are multiple avenues for the district to receive outside funding, with a grant being just one of them. For the purposes of categorizing funding, we define grants as any amount of money received by the district through an application process with the expectation that it funds a clearly articulated project and budget. Some opportunities may be labeled as a grant, but actually function as a donation. Grants should also be supplemental, meaning they don’t supplant an expense currently funded elsewhere.
